What is the YMCA Sleep Easy?
Sleep Easy is a YMCA England fundraising initiative that raises money to help change the lives of young people. The aim of Sleep Easy is simple: spend a night challenging you to sleep rough, raising money to help change the lives of vulnerable young people. All the money you raise goes directly to local YMCA accommodation services to help homeless young people.
What is homelessness?
Over 3,500 people sleep rough in the UK every night. Hidden homelessness is a major problem in the UK with over 80,000 young people face homelessness every year, three times official figures.
Homelessness is defined by the Government as ‘having no permanent home to go to’. The reality is you don’t have to be on the streets to be considered homeless; many homeless young people ‘sofa surf’ relying on the goodwill of others for a bed for the night and in some cases many years.
Imagine how you would cope if you became homeless through no fault of your own. Maybe you were fleeing an arranged marriage? Or escaping from physical, mental or sexual abuse? Or your parents have found a new partner who simply doesn’t want you around? Where would you go? How isolated would you feel?
Homeless people’s lives can get out of control very quickly; they can find themselves moving from place to place sometimes daily, often sharing their living space with strangers. With limited access to support and financial help serious issues can often occur, but it doesn’t have to be like this.
YMCAs are asking supporters to sleep out so others don’t have to this year by taking part in special Sleep Easy events all over England and Wales.
A staple part of our fundraising since 2010, Sleep Easy has seen more than 6,000 people sleep rough to raise £1m for local YMCA services that help young people rebuild their lives.
One night can make a lifetime of difference.
I’m sleeping rough so others don’t have to
Choose to give up your bed for one night, brave the cold and sleep under cardboard to help raise awareness and funding for YMCA Somerset Coast.
Not only will this be a challenging and eye–opening experience through which you will be making a real difference in the lives of disadvantaged young people, but also an evening of fun and activities. For those taking part as a corporate team, Sleep Easy is also a great opportunity to meet your corporate social responsibility targets, raise your profile and build your team. It will be the most unusual business networking meeting you’ve been to!
All money raised from this event will go towards the work of YMCA Somerset Coast including the supported accommodation we provide for over 150 young people every night, who may otherwise be homeless.
George Williams Centre
When: Friday 3rd March 2017
Starting at 7pm and finishing the next day at 7am.
Throughout the year we provide 177 beds across Sedgemoor, North Somerset, West Somerset and Taunton Deane
Last year we welcomed 250 young people whose lives had been affected by homelessness and helped to support them to realise their full potential. But homelessness is not simply rooflessness. Many of the young people we meet have a range of complex needs that make it even harder. We provide a range of opportunities for young people developing life skills, healthy lifestyles, positive activities, and progressing in education, training and employment to support them.
Across England 10,000 young people are provided with a home and support by the YMCA every night. 1 in every 100 young people experience some form of homelessness every year.
The Sleep Easy donations will support two areas of work. YMCA Somerset Coast will be doing more preventative work with young people who may be at risk of homelessness in the future.
Our aim is always to prevent a situation before it happens. We know that some young people will unfortunately become homeless, so donations will also support young people into a secure tenancy of their own. This will ensure that they will not become homeless again in the future.
- In order to participate there is a registration fee of £10 and participants are asked to raise at least £50 in sponsorship
