Gerald Townsend House

Situated directly opposite the canal, Gerald Townsend House is a stone’s throw away from Bridgwater Town Centre and walking distance of Bridgwater College, ideal for young people wanting to pursue education, employment and training opportunities. The views are pretty good too allowing residents to have the best of both worlds, high-spec design and natural surroundings.

Gerald Townsend House is the YMCA Somerset Coast’s flagship housing facility for homeless young people between 16 and 25. On October 5, 2011, after a staggering £6.2 million redevelopment the George Williams Centre and Gerald Townsend House reopened to the public.

The new accommodation facilities, rated and certified as ‘Outstanding’ by BREEAM (the world’s longest established and most widely used method of assessing, rating and certifying the sustainability of buildings) were designed with the help of young people and completed with funding from a number of investors, notably, the lifelong YMCA Bridgwater supporter and active member, Gerald Townsend, after which the project is named.

The result was an eco-friendly, contemporary accommodation facility with four single person studio flats, four mobility units providing independent living accommodation for wheel chair users and 35 bedrooms. The 35 bedrooms are grouped in five clusters, with each cluster being made up of seven bedrooms, each with ensuite bathroom. The seven bedrooms share a lounge, kitchen and laundry facilities. Residents offered accommodation here are usually those with lower support needs.

Referrals are to be made in the usual way either directly to YMCA Somerset Coast or through our partner agencies.
